El Chapos Son Captured In Mexico

El Chapo's Son Captured in Mexico

Operation Resulted in Civilian Deaths

Ovidio Guzmán-López was arrested in an operation that left 29 people dead, including 10 military personnel and 19 alleged cartel members.

Mexican security forces captured Ovidio Guzmán-López, son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, in a pre-dawn raid in the northern city of Culiacán on Thursday. The operation resulted in a fierce gun battle between cartel gunmen and security forces, leaving 29 people dead, including 10 military personnel, nine suspected cartel members, and ten civilian bystanders.

Guzmán-López, who is accused of trafficking fentanyl and other drugs into the United States, was taken into custody and flown to Mexico City, where he is being held at the maximum-security Altiplano prison.

The capture of Guzmán-López is a major victory for the Mexican government, which has been battling drug cartels for decades. However, the operation has also raised concerns about the use of excessive force by security forces and the potential for further violence in the region.

In a statement, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that the operation was "carried out with precision and without loss of life to civilians." However, witnesses and human rights groups have disputed this claim, alleging that security forces fired indiscriminately into residential areas, killing innocent bystanders.

The United States has welcomed the capture of Guzmán-López, but has also expressed concern about the civilian casualties. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a statement saying that "we offer our condolences to the families of the innocent victims who lost their lives in this operation."
